What is the Central Alabama Climate Action Plan?
The Central Alabama Climate Action Plan is a locally led initiative to strengthen our region’s resilience and economic future. It includes:
- A regional greenhouse gas inventory covering all major economic sectors to establish a clear and data-driven baseline.
- A long-term goal for emissions reduction by 2050, grounded in practical and voluntary strategies.
- A set of actionable, cost-effective measures to support that goal while promoting economic and infrastructure stability.
- A flexible toolbox of strategies that local governments across the Birmingham metropolitan area — including cities, towns, and counties — can use to improve air quality, energy efficiency, infrastructure resilience, and overall livability.
Goals of the Plan
- Support Central Alabama’s ability to prepare for and adapt to changing environmental conditions, such as severe weather and resource stress.
- Enhance regional economic competitiveness and attract investment by supporting growth in industries like electric vehicle manufacturing, advanced battery storage, and clean energy technologies.
- Ensure broad community participation and encourage locally appropriate solutions that reflect the perspectives and needs across the region.
- Identify practical steps for reducing emissions while supporting infrastructure durability, energy reliability, and job creation.
- Evaluate the cost-benefit impacts — including environmental, economic, and social factors — to help local leaders make informed, community-focused decisions.
